The Nixons - "December" (1997)

The Nixons were a rock band that hit their stride in the mid-90s with their debut album Foma. The title of Foma comes from the late Kurt Vonnegut’s novel Cat’s Cradle. The word means “harmless untruths.” The style of Foma was somewhat grunge with some great heavy songs like the title track and “Fellowship” and the softer “Sister” which became a minor radio hit for the band. In 1997 they released their self titled album which moved a little further away from grunge but still rocked with songs like “Screaming Yellow” which is probably my favorite song of theirs. Also included was today’s song “December” which is a slower acoustic song, which was kind of out of character for them but they pulled it off quite well. Since today is the first of December, I thought this would be a good way to ring in the month. The Nixons went on to release another EP entitled Scrapbook which included the acoustic version of “Sister,” which to me is better than the original, as well as a cover of the Elton John classic “Rocket Man.” Their final full length Latest Thing came out in 2000, but didn’t see much success and the band broke up shortly thereafter. Lead singer Zac Maloy has made a bit of a solo career for himself. You can check out his Myspace here.
